North Fork Payette - McCall [PN1]

Overview

This is proving ground for the McCall coast guard and a nice local practice run. The down-river record for this whole section is 17 minutes. One Class III rapid lies about 1 mile below the McCall Fish Hatchery.

The annual slalom site is at Rivers Bend, one-half mile below the put-in. The course begins at the old Lardo dam site and ends at the Fish Hatchery. See you at the slalom race next year, and by the way, blue ribbons are hard to come by as slalom ace Les Bechdel resides in McCall.

Logistics:

Put-in at Rotary Park at the southern end of Payette Lake. State Highway 55 crosses the river just above the Payette Lake outlet dam. You may run the dam or put in below. The take-out is at the sheep bridge near the McCall Smokejumpers' Headquarters, on the western edge of McCall's airport. Go east from Rotary Park and turn south on Mission Street (just east of the McCall Ranger Headquarters office.)Camping: Ponderosa State Park in McCall has an excellent campground. Also east of McCall on Lick Creek Road are plenty of good campsites.
