South Fork Payette - Old Swirley Canyon Run [PS2]
After the canyon stretch, one has the option of taking out below Little Falls, at Danskin Station or continuing on downstream through Old Swirley Canyon. It is a unique place with rock ledges, 150-foot sheer walls, and hot springs galore. This Class III run is a squirt boater’s paradise and a great place to practice eddy turns. The river is clearly following a fault line. The clear water and drop-offs are fantastic. The granite ledges form alternating eddies on either side with well defined shear lines.
Near the end of the canyon is the U.P.W. (Ultimate Play Wave). The remnants of an old dam create a relatively safe play spot. Try a few endos for the dam master.
This is an excellent open canoe run in summer and fall. The fishing can be great at times. I like to float the canyon in the evening when it is a place of great beauty.
Put-in just upstream from Danskin Station which is about 13 miles west of Lowman and about 20 miles east of Banks. Take-out at Hot Springs Campground.Camping: Camping is available at Hot Springs Campground or upstream at Pine Flats Campground; both have great hot springs.
