South Fork Payette - Below Alder Creek [PS2]

Overview

Below the Alder Creek Bridge, the river mellows as it winds its way through beautiful Garden Valley. It’s a perfect stretch for an evening canoe run or raft float. Later in the summer the fly fishing can be very good through this section. I recommend this run to the beginning canoeist or kayaker who is looking for a run to practice eddy turns. Be aware that there are some “sweepers” to be avoided.

Logistics

Put-in at the Alder Creek bridge. This is on a dirt road which turns south from the pavement, 1.5 miles east of the Garden Valley Airport. The take-out is at the confluence with the Middle Fork Payette or for some Class III action, continue down to the remains of the Deer Creek Bridge.
